The NOVA 2000 Windability Tester performs a unique toughness test on magnet wire. The magnet wire is anchored between two directional wire mounting clamps under tension. The wire between the two clamps is wrapped around a mandrel. The mandrel is located between two sets of high voltage sheaves. When the test starts, the mandrel/high voltage sheaves assembly moves from one end of the tester to the opposite end repeatedly until the wire sample fails. The wire wrapped around the mandrel is stretched and the cross section (diameter) of the wire decreases. As
the test progresses, the insulation experiences abrasion, elongation, and adhesion failure. When the insulation fails, the high voltage applied will allow the fault detection circuit to detect faults. When three faults are detected, the number of strokes are counted. Low stroke count indicates the enamel is not well cured or over-cured, and of poor toughness. High strokes count indicates well cured insulation with good toughness, abrasion resistance, flexibility, lubricity, and adhesion.
